However, I do hear what sounds like lash in the valve train, at least on one pushrod. WebOct 4, 2024 · I am familiar with the general mechanical noises associated with an air cooled HD motor. I have also experienced a number of M8 motors. This motor did not exhibit the noises that I am complaining about when I bought it last year. HD's whole marketing ploy was how much quieter the M8 was and it was true when I bought the bike.

Yes valve train noise is the nature of Harleys, Metal on Metal coming from the jugs is not. That would be considered a noise that indicates something's wrong and I would get it checked out. WebMay 29, 2024 · Mechanic and service manager came out and heard noise and said "That does not sound right" so the dealer started to dig into it for a day or so. I came to the dealer today and the bike is torn down to the cases. After talking to the mechanic and service manager the oil pump failed.

WebJul 26, 2024 · The shaft that slides thru the rocker arms is stabilized at the end by a flat that allows the bolt to slide past, but keeps the shaft from moving in an arc. After years and miles, wear occurs that allows the flats to rotate back and forth a little, causing a lot of noise. Its been my experience that it seems worse on some RK models because of the windshield. It buffers wind noise and allows it to be heard where normally you wouldn't. Take the windshield off and ride and you'll see a difference. I am running Amsoil 20-50 and have considered trying Redline 20w-60 during warm weather. Compared to the twin cam , the M8 is quiet. Maybe go to the dealer and ride a demo to see if it has the same noise. Since this bike in new to you, and its history is unknown, the FIRST thing I would do is to pop the nose cone off (cam cover) and inspect the spring-loaded tensioners.
